I was all geared up and ready to go
Bounding for to leave my mountain home with a sky of blue
Between the leaves and the color of the water was green
High over the sea.
“Do you have to leave so soon my boy?
The winter time ain’t even begun….”
“Well I’d stay awhile,” I turned to
Say.
“But the color of the water is grey and I’m going away…”

Fell the dark night and no starlight to
Light the room and no half-moon.
Fell an old tune under trumpets by a blue lagoon and no half-moon

Water, so much water is under the bridge
Have not seen you since I was 21
And you know I was just a kid
And I have oh so many friends who talk you up like your someone new
Yeah but I’ve already gotten over you
Times, times where the lamps were lit so low
Well only a stranger would think its impossible to let them go
And I have oh so many flashback scenes that I can calmly walk straight through
And now my mind is free to walk the streets we used to walk so quietly
And laid the foundation for this handful of rhymes well I have left the frustration behind my eyes
"wait! Don't let your dream just walk away!"
Exactly how many times have I heard that one today
Yeah we have oh so many friends who like to pretend we're still in high school
"water, so much water is under the bridge"

Oh! Every night I’m dreaming of you and we’re weaving through a crowded room
And I ask you to be my best friend too and then I lose you.
On a steamer with a small-city band I chase you through the room again and you’re gone before the next dance ends
(I don’t what it means) Bad Dreams
But I should do what I want to do and I should dream about whoever I want to dream about
But every night I’m calling out your name and every time you get away.
Oh and I’m damned before I even begin but ill chase you through the room again
And I’ll ask you to be my best best friend and then I lose you

Come with me and you’ll never be the same.
Come with me to the place I’m thinking of (across the bridge that keeps you form your love).
Come with me but you must come alone (across the bridge that keeps you from your home)
A Band of a Hundred Angels did I see & a chariot of white swung low (across the River Jordan for me)
Come with me to the place your thinking of (across the bridge that keeps you from your love)
And so I followed the band of angels to a shore and climbed atop a mountain high
And a ray of light shown down upon the stone a saviour rolled away long ago…

Well I'm trying hard to pass the time but I just got more time to kill
You know the flaming heart can't get his fill
But the flaming heart will try and try as he will
And the flaming eyes I had are gone, they went out with the thrill
You know the flaming heart can't get his fill
But the flaming heart will try and try as he will
Oh, I got a flaming heart
Oh, I got a flaming heart
I gotta roll like a tire
I've got a love that's mighty like a rose
And the flaming stars I had are gone
They burned out over the hill
You know the flaming heart can't get his fill
But the flaming heart will try and try as he will
Oh, I got a flaming heart
Oh, I got a flaming heart
I gotta roll like a tire
I've got a love that's mighty like a rose

"Where are you going?" for the 250th time.
"I’m waiting for a sign"
"Well it looks like another line"
And I’m walking backwards to the place where I come from
But that ain’t enough, no you want me to run.
I used to feel like California with baby’s eyes so blue
Now I feel like Carolina: I split myself in two
And I’m walking backwards from Chicago through Washington
But that ain’t enough no you want me to run.
"Better watch your soul it’ll leave you like a hundred bucks."
My friends said “Stick to your guns” but instead I just got stuck
And I’m walking backwards looking forward to getting done
But that ain’t enough no you want me to run

Wise won't be wise anymore
And mine won't be mine anymore
And I am waiting for the day when I will finally know surrender
And the weak will not be weak anymore
Lost won't be lost anymore
Hard won't be hard anymore
And I am waiting for the day when I will finally know surrender
And the weak will not be weak anymore
And I’ll be waiting like a stranger for a train
For a headlight through the rain
I don't know the day or hour
But I can sense the final power
Yours won't be yours anymore
Theirs won't be theirs anymore
I am waiting for the day when I will finally know surrender
And the weak will not be weak anymore
No the weak will not be weak anymore

For you I have travelled far and wide
For to hear your lullaby
Hey rock-a-bye
And if you can't keep an eye on
At least just leave a light on for me
And I chose a star to be my guide
Chose the moon to be my bride (and never die)
And if you can't keep an eye on
At least just leave a light on for me
We are tireless fighters
But we cannot make it on our own
We are bareback riders
We are lost on our way back home
And if you can't keep an eye on
At least just leave a light on for me

Let’s go play some money on the order the horses
Break the ribbon of that famous finish line
And then gather up our stash, babe
Find a little ranch, babe
And buy a lonely little pony to ride
Well I knew I was lucky
When a needle came and stuck me
A porcupine came and poked this cactus hide
Let me finish what I start, babe
Open up your heart, babe
I'll sow a land of milk and honey in your mind
Oh flesh and blood has found me in your arms again
I see the whisper of the wind has found your hair again
And though my heart said "give me refuge"
In your dignity my dear
All I could do is put a seashell to your ear
Oh flesh and blood has found me in your arms again
I see the whisper of the wind has found your hair again
And though my heart said "give me refuge"
In your dignity my dear
All I could do is put a seashell to your ear

Well we talked about old times
Like a couple of old guys
And took a little walk to the old baseball diamond
And along came O'Brien
With a guitar in his hand
Met us on the field with impeccable timing
He said I got a new song to show you
Though it probably ain't gonna blow your mind
And the thing about O'Brien was
He could always make a string buzz like it was 1989
And I remember my old car and that old girlfriend of mine
It was a cracked wooden thing
He said wanna talk about old strings
It's been 10, 12 years since I last changed mine
And it says Sears down the neck
Had a little blood stain on the second fret
But you know it still keeps impeccable timing
And he said I got a brand new song to show you
Though it probably ain't gonna blow your mind
And the thing about O'Brien was
He could always make a string buzz like it was still 1989
And I remember my old car and that old girlfriend of mine
And that's the story about O'Brien blew my mind
