AC/DC Outsell Kaiser Chiefs To Score UK Album Number OneOctober 27, 2008
AC/DC have scored their first UK album number one since 1980 with 'Black Ice'.
The band's new album outsold its nearest rival – Kaiser Chiefs' 'Off With Their Heads' – by nearly two copies to one. Kaiser Chiefs' third album went in at two on the chart, while former X Factor contestant Leon Jackson was a new entry at four. AC/DC's last chart topping album in the UK, 'Back in Black', came during a similar period of financial instability. The band's repeat feat has led to the suggestion that people turn to their music in times of insecurity in a bid to find something dependable. All the more remarkable about the band's latest chart success is that 'Black Ice' is only available on CD and vinyl. AC/DC have refrained from allowing fans to download their music. Meanwhile, in the singles charts, Girls Aloud's 'The Promise' is a new entry at number one, 'Wire To Wire' by Razorlight has climbed to number five.
