Leona Lewis Creates More History With American Chart DoubleApril 18, 2008
Leona Lewis has become the first British-born artist since Phil Collins in 1990 to top both the American Billboard singles and album charts at the same time.
Lewis’s debut single, ‘Bleeding Love’, returned to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 yesterday, just two days after her album, ‘Spirit’, went straight in at number one. ‘Bleeding Love’, which has sold over a million copies in America since December, had previously topped the chart in March. Leona Lewis is the first female to top both charts since Olivia Newton-John in 1974. The former X-Factor winner has embarked on a comprehensive marketing campaign in the US over recent months. ‘Spirit’, which also reached number one in the UK, became the first album by a British solo artist to debut at the top of the Billboard Top-200 on Tuesday.
