Radiohead Cause US Chart ControversyApril 14, 2008
Radiohead have caused controversy in the US charts after their latest single ‘Nude’ went in at number 37 on downloads alone.
The single is the band’s most successful in the US Charts since ‘Creep’ but some people are calling foul on the situation. The controversy surrounds the band’s recently announced plans to let fans remix the single after downloading ‘stems’ of the track from iTunes. These stems consisted of bass, voice, guitar, strings/fx and drums and some are saying they were listed as individual tracks on the download site and therefore vastly increased the sales figures for ‘Nude’. According to reports the original version of the track sold 19,000 copies while each stem sold around 9,000 copies each. The combined total of around 60,000 copies is the amount which has been used to calculate ‘Nude’s final chart position However, Billboard who oversees the Hot 100 chart have defended the stance which allowed the track to chart so high. Hot 100 director Silvio Pietroluongo said: "Billboard abided by its long-standing remix policy in regards to 'Nude.' "For the purpose of our airplay, Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs charts, Billboard merges remixes with the original version as long as the music and/or lyrics of the remix remain true to the original. "Billboard and Nielsen SoundScan do have a Digital Tracks chart, which ranks sales of individual versions/mixes, which can lead to a song having multiple listings on that chart."
