Amy Winehouse Has Been Off Drugs For A Year, Father SaysOctober 20, 2009
Amy Winehouse's father, Mitch, has revealed the singer has been off drugs for a year.
He made the revelation as he spoke to MPs about an upcoming drugs documentary, in which he investigates the rehabilitation services available to heroin addicts. Mitch told the Home Affairs committee the current healthcare system failed to offer affordable treatment for drug users. "We were very fortunate - we were able to afford the best doctors, clinical psychologists, rehabilitation and hospitals," he said of the singer's treatment. "We're making a film about people who can't afford it and unfortunately we found there are very few facilities and very little help available for people like that." Mitch said the problem had been created by the the government's current funding struture for drug treatment, which focuses on the criminal justice system, reports the BBC. Addicts are “desperately committing offences just so that they have a chance of receiving treatment”, he told MPs. Amy Winehouse's battle with addiction played out in full view of the media spotlight throughout 2008. The singer spent the first half of 2009 on the Caribbean island of St Lucia in a bid to overcome her problems. She is currently recording her as-yet-untitled third album, which is due out next year.
