Elton John Quits As Watford FC President

November 7, 2008
Elton John Quits As Watford FC PresidentSir Elton John has stepped down from his honorary position of 'life president' at Watford Football Club.

The parted ways manager Aidy Boothroyd last week after a miserable start to the 2008/2009 season which currently sees them languishing near the relegation zone.

Sir Elt's representatives yesterday released a statement on his official website which reads: “Elton John has decided to resign as Life President of Watford Football Club. In a letter to Watford Chairman Graham Simpson, Elton affirmed that he would always be a fan of Watford.

“Elton wishes the team every success for the future. However, in the light of developments over the past few months, he feels he cannot remain in any formal position within the Club.”

The 61-year-old Rocket Man is a lifelong fan of the football club and has been chairman on two separate occasions.

Sir Elton had been vocal in recent weeks criticising how the football club is being run and its ambitions.

Watford fan Felix Carrasco said: "Elton has been the heart of the club for years, he was there when we made it to the FA Cup final in ’84 and to hear that he has quit his position of life president is disappointing but understandable in the current situation.

"I for one will be sad when I am put on hold and no longer hear ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ playing at home matches."
