Michael Jackson Album Sales Boosted By X FactorOctober 22, 2008
Michael Jackson is expected to return to the UK album chart top-10 this weekend as a result of his appearance on The X Factor.
Sales of Jackson's 'King of Pop' best of have rocketed after contestants on the reality TV show were asked to sing Jackson's songs for their survival in the competition. The album, which was released earlier this year to mark the musician's 50th birthday, features a tracklist chosen by Jackson's fans. HMV's spokesman Genaro Castaldo told BBC 6Music that the huge sales increase was a further example of how powerful The X Factor has become as a marketing tool for music. "The X Factor shows have become the biggest way of promoting music in the UK ever since we lost Top Of The Pops. Everyone queues up to get on there,” he said. Before the show aired last weekend 'King of Pop' was number 47 in the album chart. "It just shows you the enduring appeal of Michael Jackson, reminding you of how brilliant his songs are, but also it tells us all how incredibly powerful the X Factor has become at promoting music in the UK,” Castaldo added. Initial sales indicate that AC/DC will take the top spot on this weekend's chart with 'Black Ice'. The band's new album is currently outselling its nearest rival – Kaiser's Chiefs 'Off With Their Heads' – by two copies to one.
