Sir Elton John Fears Watford Football Club Faces 'Catastrophe'October 2, 2008
Sir Elton John fears Watford Football Club may be heading for “catastrophe” unless they reinvest money back into the club.
The singer, who has previously held reign as the club's chairmen and director, is frustrated that Watford's current owners have not used money from Premier League parachute payments and player sales wisely. "We know from other clubs that when stability and confidence go there is danger of plummeting into freefall,” Sir Elton told the BBC. "The chairman and leading shareholders have made it clear they wish to sell the club and this comes after a profit of nearly Ј8m last year. Sir Elton also questioned where the money had gone from the sale of key players. Watford recently sold two of their best assets, Ashley Young and Marlon King, for £12million but their manager hasn't been given any to spend on replacements. "The manager and the players have my full support. But it is clear that the playing staff has been left threadbare after the sale of leading players over the last year or so, and even now I understand that there are plans for further player sales in January,” Sir Elton said. Sir Elton added that directors must strive to restore confience in order to give the club a futuer. “If [they] do not have that optimism they should go,” he added.
