Alexandra Burke And Jeff Buckley Both Set For Christmas Top-10

December 16, 2008
Alexandra Burke And Jeff Buckley Both Set For Christmas Top-10Two covers of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' will make their way into the top-ten of the UK singles chart this weekend.

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke's cover will top the chart, while the late Jeff Buckley's 1994 version could make it to number two.

Fans of Buckley launched a campaign to make his cover number one after the song was used extensively by contestants during the most recent series of the talent contest.

If Buckley's song is pushed to number two, it will mark the first time two versions of the same song have placed first and second on the Christmas chart.

"I don't think this has ever happened in UK charts history, and certainly not for Christmas," a spokesman for HMV told the BBC.

As previously reported, Burke's cover of 'Hallelujah' has already sold over 120,000 copies in just over two days, making it the fastest selling digital download ever.

The song is released on CD this Wednesday.

Today, Buckley's record label Sony announced plans to re-release a recent best-of compilation album following his exposure in the wake of the show.
