Jay Reatard Dies Aged 29

January 14, 2010
Jay Reatard Dies Aged 29Memphis garage punk rocker Jay Reatard has died aged 29, his former record label has confirmed.

Goner Records posted a banner on their site confirming the singer's death and stating that funeral plans will be announced soon.

Memphis based news site The Commercial Appeal reports that the singer - real name Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr - was found dead in his home this morning (Wednesday 13th January).

"Yeah, it’s true," friend Alicia Trout said to Commercial Appeal. "I don’t know much about it yet, because I haven’t been able to get in touch with the police."

Eric Friedl of Goner Records confirmed "Yeah. He was found at his house. That’s all I know right now."

The full Goner Records statement reads:

"It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public."

Current label Matador have also issued a statement confirming the sad news:

"We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we’ve ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly."
