David Cameron Challenged Over The Smiths At Prime Minister's Questions

December 8, 2010
David Cameron Challenged Over The Smiths At Prime Minister's QuestionsPrime Minister David Cameron has been asked about Morrissey and Johnny Marr's recent comments about his fondness for The Smiths.

Last week, Marr “forbid” the conservative leader from listening to the band, prompting Morrissey to support his request.

During Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) today (December 8), Labour MP Kerry McCarthy tested Cameron on the names of Smiths songs.

The exchange came ahead of a Commons vote on the government's controversial changes to University tuition fees.

“As someone who claims to be an avid fan of The Smith, the Prime Minister will no doubt be rather upset this week that both Morrissey and Johnny Marr have banned him from liking them,” McCarthy said.

“The Smiths are, of course, the archetypal students band. If he wins tomorrow night's vote, what songs does he think students will be listening to? 'Miserable Lie', 'I Don't Owe You Anything' or 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'.”

In response, Cameron said: “I except that if I turned up I probably wouldn't get 'This Charming Man' and if I went with the Foreign Secretary [William Hague] it would probably be 'William It Was Really Nothing'.”

Meanwhile, Morrissey also revealed that he turned down a recent appearance on The Andrew Marr Show alongside David Cameron because the conservative wanted to repeal the Hunting Act.
