U2's Spider-Man Musical Slammed By Critics, Gets Spoofed OnlineFebruary 9, 2011
Theatre critics in New York have almost unanimously slammed the new U2-scored musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.
The production, which is still in previews at the Foxwoods Theatre following a string of delays, was called a “stinker” by the Washington Post. The Hollywood Reporter described it as a “web-slinging folly”, while the New York Times said: "Spider-Man is... the most expensive musical ever to hit Broadway. It may also rank among the worst." Critic Ben Brantley added that the production may be “broken in every respect that is beyond repair”. The negative reviews have inspired a Spider-Man spoof – which can be watched below now. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark is believed to have cost $65million. Many of the delays have been as a result of technical problems during previews, which have often seen cast members left dangling above the audience. U2's Bono and The Edge have created the score for the musical, which is still selling out despite the negative publicity.
