Islamic Party Plans To Protest Outside Avril Lavigne Concert

August 28, 2008
Islamic Party Plans To Protest Outside Avril Lavigne ConcertMembers of Malaysia's conservative Islamic party are to mount a large scale protest outside an Avril Lavigne concert on Friday (August 29th).

The Pan Malaysian Islamic Party believe the concert, which will be held in Kaula Lumpur, promotes the wrong values ahead of the country's independence day.

Despite conflicting media reports, last week the party failed in its attempt to ban the concert after the Malaysian government ruled that it could proceed as long as it is "not a bad influence, especially on the young".

In a statement the Associated Foreign Press, PAS insisted that it will “order” the country's youth to protest.

"A concert of this nature is not conducive to teach the younger generation to become good citizens, upright and competitive, but instead would weaken them morally and mentally," the party spokesperson said.

All concerts that take place in Malaysia are subject to strict guidelines which are imposed to uphold the values of the Muslim religion.

Last year, Gwen Stefani was forced to cover up during her performance in the country after student protesters publicly opposed her concert.
