Jarvis Cocker Clarifies Conservative Government CommentsApril 29, 2009
Jarvis Cocker has acted quickly to clarify comments he made about a possible future conservative government.
Earlier this week, the former Pulp frontman was quoted as saying that a Tory government was “necessary” because there was “no alternative”. It was assument that he had suggested his support for the conservative party. But in a statement released yesterday, Cocker said: "In no way am I supporting or suggesting that a Conservative government is a good thing, far from it. "Rather, what I intended to get across was that, in the absence of any real alternative, a Conservative government at this point unfortunately seems inevitable." Cocker raised the potential for a future conservative government when asked by GQ magazine about the current financial crisis. He said he couldn’t understand why British government was trying to save “a banking system that obviously doesn’t work”. Cocker, who described Gordon Brown’s actions as a “mockery”, added: “Why don't they say, 'Well, sod that, let's do something else?'" Cocker is understood to have been a Labour supporter during the 1990s – a period when both the party and British music enjoyed a renaissance.
