Metallica: 'New Bassist Has Contributed More Than Jason Newsted Did In 14 Years'August 6, 2008
Metallica frontman James Hetfield has said new bassist, Robert Trujillo, has contributed more to the band's new album than the man he replaced ever did.
Trujillo took over from Jason Newsted, Metallica's second bassist, in 2003, but 'Death Magnetic' is the first time he has appeared on their studio output. Speaking to MTV, Hetfield said: "In the studio — and no offense towards Jason — but Rob has already contributed more to this record than Jason did in 14 years." Drummer Lars Ulrich also echoed Hetfield's words, saying it was “difficult to praise Rob without insinuating that there was something not great about his predecessor”. “But Rob, he's been with us five years now, and it's completely effortless. ... It's never felt this complete." Newsted joined Metallica in the late 80s following the death of their original bassist Cliff Burton. 'Death Magnetic' is the band's first studio album since 2003's 'St Anger' and is released worldwide on September 12th.
