Opera Star Katherine Jenkins Booed At Harrods Sale By Anti-Fur CampaignersDecember 29, 2008
Opera singer Katherine Jenkins was booed by anti-fur campaigners as she opened the Harrods winter sale in London.
Protesters screamed “shame on Katherine” as she made her way to the department store by horse-drawn carriage. Leona Lewis had originally been scheduled to open the sale but dropped out because the store stocks fur. According to anti-fur campaigners, Harrods is the only major UK store that still sells imported animal fur. John Wilson, a campaigner from the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade, told the BBC: "We are gathered here today because of our disgust at Ms Jenkins who professes to be against animal cruelty and the fur trade." Speaking to reporters, Jenkins said: "Personally I do not eat meat or wear fur, but people are entitled to their opinions." Protestors’ shouts were eventually drowned out by the stampede of festive shoppers who were welcomed by Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed. As previously reported, Lewis was recently named animal rights group PETA’s Person of the Year for her “kindness to animals”. (by Jason Gregory) See also: |
