Bristol Beats London, Manchester And Liverpool To 'Most Musical City' Title

March 12, 2010
Bristol Beats London, Manchester And Liverpool To 'Most Musical City' TitleBristol has been crowned the “most musical city” in the UK following a survey by the Performing Rights Society (PRS for Music).

The city, which has spawned acts including Portishead, Massive Attack, F*ck Buttons and Tricky, came out ahead of cities such as Cardiff, Glasgow and Manchester.

PRS conducted the survey by listing all their 65,000 members by their birthplace and then working out the average number in each city relative to the population size.

Although London had the most musicians, because of its 8million population, the capital was relegated to 26th place.

Liverpool too suffered a similar fate down at 18th.

Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS, told the BBC: "Bristol has been a long-standing contributor to the British music scene, constantly injecting its unique pizazz of trip-hop and rock bands.

"The city's culture has always warmed to an eclectic music dynamic, paving the way forward for many of the country's greatest venues whilst also inspiring a hotbed of music talent."

The top ten most musical cities in the UK are:

  1. Bristol
  2. Cardiff
  3. Wakefield
  4. Glasgow
  5. Cheltenham
  6. Edinburgh
  7. Manchester
  8. Paisley
  9. Doncaster
  10. Londonderry
