Former Wilco Member Jay Bennett DiesMay 26, 2009
Former Wilco member Jay Bennett has died at the age of 45 in his sleep of as yet unknown causes.
Bennett, who also performed with Titanic Love Affair and Blues Traveler, passed away on Sunday morning (May 24) according to his family. His friend, Edward Burch, told the Chicago Sun-Times: "Early this morning, Jay died in his sleep and an autopsy is being performed. The family is in mourning and is unavailable for comment at this time." Bennett worked with Wilco from 1994, helping to co-write many songs on their albums 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' and 'Summerteeth'. He had a notoriously abrasive relationship with Jeff Tweedy and left the band in 2001 due to the pairs continuing conflicts. In a statement about Bennett's death, Tweedy and Wilco said: "We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him – as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. “Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time." Just last month Bennett announced that he was suing Wilco for $50,000 in unpaid royalties. (by Daniel Melia) See also: Wilco Stream New Album Online Following Leak (14.05.2009)
