Dizzee Rascal 'Amazed' 'Bonkers' Became Mainstream Radio HitJuly 6, 2009
Dizzee Rascal has said he was amazed that recent single 'Bonkers' became a radio hit.
The song, which was created alongside DJ and producer Armand Van Helden, topped the UK charts in the spring. The track is the British grime star's second number one single after 2008's 'Dance Wiv Me'. Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Dizzee Rascal revealed he and Van Helden had initially refrained from airing 'Bonkers' live. "Then we sat on it for ages, didn’t really play it out or anything and then the one time I performed it live, it was bigger than 'Dance Wiv Me' at the time 'Dance Wiv Me' was number one,” he said. "It’s very, very dirty. A lot of people think I’m going towards the mainstream and that, but that is very gritty. It’s almost amazing how it made it on to radio." Meanwhile, Dizzee Rascal also spoke about new single 'Holiday', which is released in August. He said the track, created alongside 'Dance Wiv Me' producer Calvin Harris, saw him play a “knight in shining armour man”. He added: "I’m just saying ‘You wanna go away, let’s go away, let’s drive away, we could rave, let’s go on holiday’, and have a good time and forget about all the worries." The song is the latest single to be taken from Dizzee Rascal's forthcoming as-yet-untitled new album, which is due out in September.
