Blur's Dave Rowntree Fails In General Election Bid For LabourMay 7, 2010
Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has failed in his bid to become an MP.
Rowntree, a Labour candidate, came second to the Conservatives in the constituency of the Cities of London and Westminster. Current Tory MP Mark Field was re-elected with a 52.2 per cent share of the vote, compared to Rowntree’s 22.2 per cent. Despite the result, Rowntree said the vote had “held up well”, and praised the re-election of fellow Labour candidate Karen Buck in the nearby constituency of Westminster North. “I came second, vote held up well, and Karen Buck kept her seat,” he wrote on Twitter. “Fantastic result." Rowntree also failed in his bid to become a Labour member of Westminster City Council in 2007 and 2008. Britain has been left with a hung parliament after no party was able to secure an outright majority in yesterday’s General Election.
